Safety needs for autonomous vehicles

Autonomous vehicles on industrial sites depend on wireless links to carry safety-critical signals, but what counts as 'reliable enough' isn't the same everywhere — some sites keep people and machines fully separated, others don't, and many run mixed autonomous and human-driven fleets side by side. Open-source safety projects are already pointing the right way: separate the safety protocol from the transport underneath it. We think that idea deserves to become an open standard — shared criteria for reliability, diagnosability, and fault isolation, scoped to each site's actual risk profile, that any wireless technology can be measured against. Private 5G, Public 5G, Wi-Fi variants, mesh, or satellite can be used as per client needs. However the goal is a verifiable bar, so that design implementations can be specified, issues isolated in the real world. Testopia intends to contribute the first measured implementation.
